DESCRIPTION

How can we have an Economy centre in the centre of the city of Ghent?”

The main procedure that takes place in this project has the form of a vertical stacked vegetable production with LED lights. This new technology allows vegetables to grow in a totally controlled environment, with stable temperature and moisture levels and without any natural lighting. The vegetables, in order to grow, need just the red and the blue light of the whole solar spectrum. So the LED lights produce only these colours that combined produce a bright magenta shade.

For the main procedure of production, we use an existing solid brick building, called the “Μonolith”. The new added volume on the top floor constructed by perforated metal panels create the “crown” of this volume. The “magenta production” is being interrupted only by a horizontal line of windows through which we can feel the pulse of The Monolith. The monolith is surrounded by two linear new buildings on the sides. The one on the east side hosts the rest of the facilities of the production such as the offices and the administration areas, a research centre and a conference room.
